Uniting Heaven and Earth: An Introduction to the Céile Dé Tradition

This ongoing cycle of workshops (one roughly every 4 weeks, with the 2nd cycle ending in June) introduces the Céile Dé tradition and its practices in four sessions, each of which includes chant, meditation, and teachings. Your teacher will be Sue Mosher, an ordained oide or teacher in the Céile Dé tradition. You may join the cycle at any point, and it is not necessary to attend the workshops in order. Except as noted, sessions will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day in Arlington, VA, convenient to I-66 and Metro. See registration page for dates, cost, and other details.

The ancient tradition of Céile Dé leads us through the gap between our highest aspiration and our everyday reality. Even as we seek that which lies Beyond, we remain grounded in reverence for the Earth that gives us life and ever-births the Incarnation in our surrendered hearts. Suspended between Heaven and Earth, we follow our deep desire to unite the two in Christ and experience the transformative power of Love.

This experiential introduction to the tradition’s philosophy and time-tested practices for spiritual growth will explore powerful Gaelic sacred chants, the ancient holy days and seasons of the Gael, and a way of life that supports real transformation through meditation, devotion, and inner witnessing.

Newcomers will have the opportunity to experience further, ongoing practice within a local group that offers a powerful container for those who seek a path of commitment and openness to real inner change.

Deepening Into the Céile Dé Tradition

An intensive time for entering deeply into this ancient path - the longest-surviving esoteric spiritual lineage in the Celtic Countries.

To enable us to work as deeply as possible with the energies we are drawing forth, we will often hold silence between teaching sessions and take time to be in Nature in the celebrated grounds of Parceval Hall,

Although this event is intended as a follow-up to a previous teachings, there will be frequent reference to what has been taught before, so newcomers are welcome and will find there is plenty of opportunity to catch up.

Our time together will include -
~ Regular prayer times/meditation practices every day
~ Learn ancient Gaelic sacred chants
~ Learning ancient spiritual practices for inner transformation
~ Creative study of Celtic Mythology

“Ach cha mhise, ach Criosd a tha beò annam” (Not I, but Christ lives in me)

Celtic spirituality says that inside us all there is a core of pure Divinity. Our task, in terms of Spiritual growth, is to enable this state of consciousness to live through us, in whatever situation we find ourselves. Christ asks from us the same as He asked of Himself – to be The Incarnation; the harmonious union of Human and Divine.

This enlightened state - The Christ In Us - is covered by veils that obscure our Divinity, not only from others, but also from ourselves. Our inner life is about the owning - the anointing - of that Divinity: learning how to live effectively in the world whilst embodying our deepest Truth IS the Christened Path. We are called to awaken, as Christ was awake to his Divinity... In this respect, as some have observed, Celtic Christianity has much in common with the teachings of The Buddha.

In our gathering we will explore -

~ Some of the ways offered by the Céile Dé tradition to identify our illusions, so we can outgrow them.
~ The means and the courage to live, breathe and have our being rooted in the state of consciousness that remains when the veils fall away.
~ Holding Heaven and Earth in a Holy embrace and knowing that they are One.
~ That ‘The Kingdom’ will come, step by courageous step, through each of us, as we walk with Christ-ened awareness through this precious gift of life.

There will be regular meditation practices every day. A sense of spaciousness and silence will be held between teaching sessions.

'Growing a Soul' - Inner Transformation in Celtic Spirituality

Ancient Celtic Christianity speaks often about 'Growing a soul'. What is meant by this...what is it that grows in us... and what is it that stifles and hinders this growth?

To the Céile Dé, the soul - Anam - is the 'virgin womb' that will birth the Christ in us. How can we be like Mary; able to consent with all our hearts to the mysterious, ongoing process of spiritual conception and gestation ...and then freely offer the fruit of our Anam to the whole world? Do we even know how to consent, in every given moment, to the Great Mystery?

In the Céile Dé tradition, the state of feeling exiled from ourSelves is likened to a series of veil-like traits, called Cáilean, that hide us from the Truth of our own Divinity. This gathering will offer us some of the ancient ways of identifying the Cáilean that hinder soul-growth - and how to let those veils fall; so that the light, that has always been hidden within our deepest core, can shine forth.

Our time together will include:-

~ How do the Cáilean come into being?
~ Some of the ways offered by the Céile Dé tradition to identify them.
~ How do we work on dissolving them?
~ What part does Grace play in the process?
~ What remains when the work is done?

“Uniting Heaven and Earth” – The Ancient Celtic Tradition of the Céile Dé

This earliest surviving manifestation of Celtic Christianity is rooted in a Native reverence for The Mother… Earth… as She ever-births The Incarnation in our surrendered hearts. This inner journey takes us through Nature and the Celtic Otherworld, beyond what our imagination will ever conceive, into the realms of the Unknowable One, who wants to break our hearts, so that we might find The Beloved there - and dissolve at last into the No-thingness beyond all things...

This ancient tradition is at once, lyrical, mythopoeic, esoteric and deeply devotional. It seeks balance at all times between the need for earthly, psychological and mystical development. It has at its heart a deep faith in and celebration of the transformative power of Love.

Our time together will include:-

~ Regular prayer times/meditation practices every day
~ Explore some of the mythology and philosophy of the tradition.
~ Learn ancient Gaelic sacred Chants.
~ And other spiritual practices, that honour the beautiful world we live in.

Immradi Senchas (A Voyage in Words around the Ancient Lore)

An intensive time for entering deeply into this ancient path - the longest-surviving esoteric spiritual lineage in the Celtic Countries.

Teachings and practices will take place during the day as well as in the evenings. Between sessions, to enable us to work as deeply as possible with the energies we are drawing forth, we will often hold silence and take time to be in Nature in the beautiful woodlands of Kinnoull Hill.
